Remote assistance with library resources
Please contact us if you need assistance with accessing library resources or finding materials for your research.
Staff are currently available 7am – 5pm Monday through Friday. You can also contact your subject librarian.
To access print materials from the general collections, please contact us. Libraries staff will scan and email chapters and articles or mail entire items such as books.
Returning and delivering items
Due dates have been extended for items borrowed by students. Most items are now due August 15. Please contact us for questions.
Deliveries to other branches and faculty deliveries are suspended until further notice.
Status of physical spaces and locations
MD Anderson Library
MD Anderson Library (including the 24-Hour Lounge) is closed until further notice. Library services are being provided remotely at this time. Library staff are available by phone at 713-743-9710, 8am – 5pm Monday through Friday.
Faculty offices in MD Anderson Library: Library staff can retrieve items, please contact us. Only researchers who have received permission to return to campus will be given appointments to pick up materials in library offices. A face mask will be required.
Health Sciences Library
William R. Jenkins Architecture, Art, and Design Library
The College of Architecture and Design building is now closed to students and visitors. Library services are being provided remotely until further notice. More information can be found in this announcement. Please follow the blog for updates.
The Music Library is closed until further notice. Services are being provided remotely.
In-person access to Special Collection materials will be by appointment only and will require face masks and other protective measures. Appointments will only be granted to researchers who have received permission to return to campus. To discuss your needs and available options, contact:

Access library materials
Most UH databases and journals are available anywhere that has an internet connection, including your home. You will be prompted to log in via CougarNet if off-campus.
If you use Google Scholar, set up Library Links or use Google Scholar on our website so that you have access to resources off-campus.
E-books for your courses are available from many sources.
Streaming media is available for your classes. Services may experience high demand.
We cannot start new subscriptions to journals or databases at this time. Please contact your subject librarian to explore alternative resources.
Working with librarians
Subject and research support librarians are working remotely. We are available to support students and faculty with:
- reference consultations
- research consultations
- synchronous and asynchronous library instruction and workshops
- help finding library and open educational resources materials for courses
Print book purchases
We are unable to purchase and receive print materials due to the closure of MD Anderson Library and campus mail services.
Where possible and desired, we will request the electronic version instead. Where that is not possible, requests for print materials will be held until further notice.
Interlibrary loan and document delivery
Our electronic request services are currently available. Print request services are not available.
Where possible, ILL will attempt to obtain electronic copies of materials requested in a physical format. We are also available for consultations if questions about requesting materials arise.
Returning ILL materials
We have turned off ILL overdue notices for all patrons and libraries as of March 16, 2020. All materials now out will be due June 30, 2020 (this will be extended as needed).
Technology and media items
We are not able to lend out technology equipment or media items at this time.
The University Libraries remains in regular contact with campus officials and will continue to provide updates to our patrons when warranted. The following communications have been shared, beginning with the most recent:
