Grant-funded Research Support

Libraries Services and Programs

Success in grant awards is critical in fostering innovation and advancing University of Houston strategic goals in research and student success. Grant-funded project teams usually encounter challenges in data management planning, data organization, description, display as well as complying with public-access publication mandate. With infrastructure and expertise in technology, data, collection and research strategies, UH Libraries (UHL) offers programs and services that connect the library’s talent with the university grant-funded project needs. Please see UH Libraries services and programs that can offer grant-related research support to campus researchers.

Contribution Models for UH Grant-funded Projects

UH Libraries’ support to grant-funded research projects can be via two models, based on the extent of Libraries talent and resources needed by researchers to complete the grant project:

  • The Core-Service Contribution: suitable for routine library services offered to grant-funded projects that require a minimal contribution from the Libraries employees, such as initial consultation, Cougar ROAR configuration/setup, training, etc.
  • The Fee-based Contribution: suitable for potential partnership on grant-funded projects that require more extended services and time from Libraries employees such as materials curation, digitization, data manipulation and analysis etc. This kind of more extensive contributions need to be funded directly from grant budget and appear in the grant budget as a direct expense from the project in form of:

    • A percentage of the UH Libraries employee’s annual salary (typically up to 2% FTE) per time and effort for grant activities, or
    • A portion or all of a new grant personnel’s (including student labor) salary to perform grant-related activities

While we believe that these two models will work for many situations, UH Libraries remains flexible and accommodating when needed. Keeping a flexible mindset will ensure that the Libraries remains responsive and relevant to potential grant partnership while also thoughtful to internal Libraries capacities, priorities and workflows. UH Libraries decision on services and partnership with grant-funded project is based on assessment of the Libraries capacity and other established criteria, not on first-come, first-serve basis.
