Virtual software is available using VMware Horizon.

Open VMWare Horizon on any library computer and log-in with your CougarNet to access these software.

Access virtual software on your own device

You can access virtual software on your own device in two ways:

  1. Desktop application that runs virtual software
  2. Run virtual software in your browser using the web client

On library computers, we recommend saving your work on virtual software to a USB stick or some other removable storage device.

1. Allow access to your device to save

You must first give VMware Horizon Client access to the storage space and/or USB stick to save.

When the client is first launched, VMware will ask you to allow access. Select “Allow” when this window appears. You have now given the client access to your storage space and can save your files (see below).

If you want to change access settings after initial launch:

  1. Go the the settings in VMware Horizon Client
  2. Go to “Sharing”
  3. Check the box labeled “Allow access to [your username]” to allow access to your device’s storage
  4. Check the box labeled “Allow access to removable storage” to allow access to your USB stick or other removable storage devices

2. Save your files

  1. In the software’s menu, go to “File > Save As…”
  2. Select “This PC”
  3. Find and select your device’s local storage or your inserted USB stick. It may be listed under “Devices and drives” and/or “Network locations”
  4. The files on your device or USB stick should be visible. Select your preferred location and select “Save”

1. Download and install VMware Horizon Client

The client is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Chrome OS.

  1. Go to vcon.lib.uh.edu to download the client
  2. Select “Install VMWare Horizon Client”
  3. Find your operating system*, select “Go to Downloads,” and download the installation file
  4. After downloading, run the installation to install the client

*For Windows users, do not download the Windows 10 UMP version from the Microsoft store, as it as limited functions.

2. Connect to the server

After VMWare Horizon Client is installed on your device:

  1. Open VMware Horizon Client
  2. Enter the connection server: vcon.lib.uh.edu
  3. Select “Connect”

3. Login with CougarNet

  1. Enter your CougarNet ID and Password in the login window
  2. Domain: COUGARNET
  3. Select “Login”

The list of available software should appear.

Opening files

  1. Use the program’s menu and select “Open”
  2. Select “This PC”
  3. Under Network Locations, select the local hard drive that is named after the username for your PC
  4. Find and select your file to open

Saving files

Be sure to save to your local hard drive you opened your file from. Do not save to the remote CougarNet drive, they are not guaranteed to remain saved there.

You can also open and save directly to a USB drive using the desktop application.

Go to VMWare Horizon HTML Access and log-in with CougarNet to access the web client, which does not require downloading any programs.

It has limitations compared to the desktop application:

  • Only your remote CougarNet drive is immediately accessible. Transferring files to and from your personal hard drive must be done with the File Transfer panel
  • 2GB maximum file upload size, 50MB maximum file download size
  • CougarNet drives have limited capacity (250MB), many large files cannot be saved there
    • CougarNet drives are not recommended for long term storage of important files

  3. Click “Upload” near the top left of the window
