Research & Student Engagement’s Focus

To support the student learner experience and establish a tangible and potential path for their opportunity to engage with a community of scholars. This approach will empower us to solidify the transformational experiences happening across learning, research, and daily access to our materials, specialists, services, and spaces. This portfolio frames the larger context of access, learning, and research that takes place every day throughout the Libraries.

Areas for which we will develop benchmarks and map to success measures in alignment with the University Strategic Plan include: Student Success, Nationally Competitive Research, & Social Responsibility

Student Success

  • Enhance and amplify open educational resources (OER) priorities and encourage OER use in course reserves
  • Activate newly established curriculum mapping protocols for undergraduate courses
  • Begin the above for graduate students in partnership with UH Graduate School
  • Expand online learning (synchronous/asynchronous) and face-to-face teaching efforts; develop a centralized online learning hub for all instruction assets
  • Experiment with new software to implement point-of-need teaching materials
  • Engage in meaningful instruction
  • Continue to build critical partnerships with stakeholder services across campus (e.g., Writing Center, Office of Undergraduate Research, etc.)
  • Re-envision hybrid teaching and learning spaces within the Libraries such that classrooms foster active learning similar to R1 research universities (Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education) across the country
  • Establish and promote Research Visibility and Impact program, focusing on graduate students, researchers, and faculty

Nationally Competitive Research

  • Support capstone and other research-intensive courses
  • Extensively map the research and learning lifecycle across Libraries’ departmental specialists
  • Host Digital Research Institutes with UH Graduate School
  • Offer dissertation-to-monograph consultations
  • Open-to-all introductory-level training for students beginning research
  • Build research fellowships and other incentivized pathways with UH Graduate School, Office of Undergraduate Research, and others
  • Continue to offer popular Sponsored Projects program for new research
  • Establish core facility for digital humanities

Social Responsibility

  • Ensuring instruction is as inclusive as possible
  • Co-curricular support, particularly when engagement with the Third Ward community is evident
  • Strengthen our community borrower privileges/accounts
  • Focus on programming to support all diverse backgrounds and abilities
