Course Reserves
The library places physical and electronic materials on course reserves at the request of UH faculty.
Electronic course reserves are made available via the instructor’s course in Canvas
Checking out physical Course Reserves materials
Physical materials can be checked out at the service desk of the corresponding library. Please confirm service desk hours before checking out any physical items.
- Books and other physical items on reserve are available by request in the location listed on
Location short codes:- AN = MD Anderson Library
- AR = Architecture, Design, & Art Library
- MU = Music Library
- OP = Health Sciences Library
- To request the item at the service desk, please have the item title, course number, or the instructor’s name
- Most reserve items must stay in the library and check out for 3 hours and have $1/hour overdue fines
- Reserves that may leave the library check out for 2 days, depending on the item, and $3/day overdue fines
- There are no renewals on reserve items
- Scans or copies of a reserve item can be made using scanners and photocopiers. Please observe copyright law when making copies or scans of reserves items.
Placing materials on Course Reserves
Faculty may place both physical and electronic items on reserve for their courses. Materials may be submitted:
- In Canvas
- Online using the Course Reserves request form
- In person at the MD Anderson Library service desk
Faculty may drop off physical items for reserve at the MD Anderson Library service desk during the library’s service desk hours.

- Please allow 2-3 business days for response time
- Course reserves are processed in the order in which they are received
- Courses must be activated in Canvas before reserves requests can be processed
Instructions for activating courses in Canvas
- Log in to Canvas (for login issues, contact Canvas)
- Select the course (Published or Unpublished) you wish to add Course Reserves to.
- From the left menu bar, select “Course Reserves.”
- From the [Choose a semester] drop-down menu, select the semester you wish to activate. Then click on [Create Course].
- The Course Reserves (Ares) interface will be displayed. Your course is now active.
